Ever since reading Dear Emmie Blue, I have been a big fan of Lia Louis. She has written some of my favorite novels and every year I look forward to reading her newest one. She always makes me feel every emotion along with the characters, from the pain, heartbreak and the angst to the lighter, happier, falling-in-love moments.

Allie Lake and Milo Ford have accidentally swapped phones. After being on the same flight, the unthinkable happened, and their phones got mixed up and ended up in the hands of the other. We rely on our phones way too much, but it would be very disturbing to not have the object that seems to contain so much of your life on it.

I love stories like these where people meet in unusual circumstances. Allie is a scientist/researcher and Milo is an actor, so in reality, they would probably never have the opportunity to meet. When Allie and Milo begin to communicate and hatch a plan for getting their phones back, they end up spending quite a bit of time talking. From late night calls to short messages, they formed a friendship, a bond, and an attraction. Of course, nothing was going to be as smooth as an easy phone swap.

The Phone Swap has a lot of things that I enjoy in a novel: it’s a slow-burning romance, the setting was interesting, it has a good meet-cute, and it has a good cast of characters (I especially enjoyed Iris, Jameson, Lars, and Polly). This novel should have checked every box for me, unfortunately, I had a difficult time getting into the story. I wanted to be glued to the pages, to love it as much as I had loved the author’s previous novels. While it hurts my heart to admit that I didn’t love The Phone Swap, I will still be looking forward to Lia Louis’s next novel.
