Well, it’s no secret that whenever I’m in the mood for a feel-good romantic comedy, Sophie Kinsella is one of my top picks.  If I need a pick-me-up after a darker, heavier read, or if real life seems to be dragging me down, this author’s writing has always been able to make me smile and have me laughing within the first couple of pages.  Can You Keep a Secret? was just the book that I was looking for.

I think what draws me to Kinsella’s books is her ability to create normal characters that most people can probably relate to.  Yes, she makes them quirky, puts them in some outrageous situations, but at the heart of it, these characters all have little bits and pieces that I think most readers can connect with.

I liked Emma Corrigan from the very first page.  Emma’s life wasn’t a complete mess, but she seemed to get herself into some pretty sticky situations, and that’s what made this book so much fun.  Oh, and she also had some entertaining secrets that she was keeping.

After trying and failing at a few different career attempts, she finally thought that she would be able to move up the corporate ladder from her entry level marketing position.  When a business trip to Scotland doesn’t go quite as she’d planned, she dejectedly hops on a plane back home in the hopes that it hasn’t ruined her career advancement.  But the trip home doesn’t go smoothly either.  The plane that she’s traveling on experiences some major turbulence and Emma is convinced that she’s going to die.  Did I mention that she’s afraid of flying?  Well, faced with her last precious moments of life with her nerves all amok, she rambles off her most private, intimate, and embarrassing secrets to the man beside her.  And let me tell you, they are hilarious!  Luckily, everyone survives the flight, but to Emma’s horror, the man from the seat next to hers ends up being the CEO of the company where she works.  And yes, Emma’s horror and awkward situation was my reading delight.

This was such a fun, lighthearted read.  With the perfect blend of humor, charm, romance, and a cast of great characters, Can You Keep a Secret? was a pleasure to read from beginning to end.
