Is this where you start with the author of Fight Club? Why not?

Lullaby has an interesting premise. It is about a newspaper reporter (yes, the story is a bit dated) writing a series on sudden infant death syndrome. By the way, he also happens to be a widower. So, right off the bat, this is a story about death and survival. So, not really a feel-good type of story, but then again, I don’t get the impression that Chuck Palahniuk writes feel-good stories.

In Lullaby we have a very sinister cause of this mysterious affliction and our hero(?) happens to discover the cause through his investigative journalism skills.

What I loved the most about this book were the eclectic cast of characters. Beyond the circumstances of this book, there is no way that they ever would have been together. The interactions were thought-provoking. Palahniuk intentionally put this cast together to bring out the best and worst of each other.

At the end of the day, Lullaby is a book about power: who has it, who should have it, and can anyone really be trusted with it? Palahniuk asks questions and doesn’t answer them. I suppose he doesn’t want to take that power away from the reader.
