The Midnight Train

By Matt Haig

I suppose you could say this story plays with the shoulda-coulda-woulda trope. If you could go back and redo something in your life, what would it be? Could you have lived a better, more fulfilling life?

Matt Haig takes the idea that your life flashes before your eyes when you die and puts it firmly on the rails of a wild, imaginative journey. In a way, it feels fitting, life speeds by so quickly, and we rarely take the time to appreciate every moment. There are those defining stations that shape us, but it can be hard to stop and smell the roses when life keeps rushing down the tracks.

Wilbur is a fantastic character. He is an underdog, and most people love to cheer for one. He had a shaky start, but he was driven, and once he got rolling, there was nothing that could slow him down—not even what was best for him. I really felt for Wilbur, and Maggie deserved the man he could have been.

The Midnight Train was a lot of fun. It was filled with great characters, and I really connected with them. Matt Haig has a real talent for capturing interpersonal relationships.
