The Nightingale
 By Kristin Hannah

What can I possibly say about this novel that hasn’t already been said. I had this book on my Kindle for a long time, just waiting for the right moment to read it. It has been recommended to me multiple times, and I had always planned on reading it, but I knew without a doubt that I had to be in the right headspace for it because it was going to break my heart.

Is there ever a good time to get your heart broken, though? I just decided to go for it. As expected, it was a very well-written story with exceptional characters. You know when you select a story set during World War II that it is going to be a difficult read. While the characters were fiction, every part of their story felt real. That is the true testament to Kristin Hannah’s talent. The war was cruel, horrific, dangerous, dehumanizing, haunting. And again, while this was a fiction novel, we all know that such things did occur.

I think I spent the last thirty percent or so of the book in tears, and not just a tear here and there, no, I was practically sobbing. When a story can evoke such strong emotions, you know that it did its job. I wish the entire premise and setting of the novel could have just been fabricated from the author’s imagination, but unfortunately, it did take place. That’s where I shook my head repeatedly throughout the novel. It still baffles my mind that people could be so cruel and evil to other humans.

The Nightingale was a riveting book that transported me back to a time that I wish had never happened. It was just as heartbreaking as I had imagined it would be, but it was so worth the read.
