I will just start off my review by saying that I loved this book. Whenever I begin reading a novel and get so caught up in it that I don’t want to put it down, I know that it is going to be a new favorite.
Chuck and Joey are both aspiring writers. Chuck is thirty-five and has a good job as a copywriter; Joey is twenty-three and works at a coffee shop. While they are at different points in their lives, when they meet at a bar one evening, they end up embarking on a relationship of sorts.
What I enjoyed about this novel was that the relationship, albeit very messy and complicated, was very realistic and relevant to the times that we live in. The characters were going through their own hardships, dealing with their shortcomings, struggling with loneliness, depression, and wondering where their lives were heading. They were both seemingly at a standstill while their friends and loved ones seemed to be moving forward and thriving with their careers, money, and their relationships. It’s a tough world out there and these characters were definitely feeling all of the bumps and bruises along the way.
I felt for these characters. I did. Perhaps one of them more than the other, but as I mentioned, they were both struggling. Did I want to shake some sense into them? Absolutely. They were like two lost souls who found each other to soothe the pain of loneliness. Their story hurt. It was troubling. It made me feel so much, and that is what a book is supposed to do.
I Want You to Be Happy was just a wonderful, well-written novel. I will be looking forward to reading more books by Jem Calder in the near future!
