2 Book Lovers Reviews

The Hitchhikers was a fast-paced, wild ride that kept me on the edge of my seat. This is exactly what I was hoping it would be. I love it when that happens; I am a very happy reader.

It’s 1976, and Tom and Alice are going on a vacation through Canada in their new Winnebago. Not only do they plan on sightseeing their way to the Olympics, but they are in need of a change of scenery and some quality time to spend together after experiencing a very difficult time in their marriage. When they come across Blue and Ocean, a young couple walking along a rural highway, Tom decides to pull over and offer them a ride. Of course, I was shaking my head and quietly telling Tom not to stop, to keep driving and not give them a second thought, but the book is called The Hitchhikers, and 1976 was a different time, and Tom was just too nice of a guy.

What started off as merely a lift to a nearby town quickly turned into an extended ride with Tom and Alice. The couples were getting along well, and although Alice had some reservations about including two strangers on their road trip, she went along with it. Blue and Ocean were not simply a couple of innocent hitchhikers, though. Oh, no, they were not. They were actually Simon and Jenny. When Alice and Tom became aware of the danger that they had put themselves in, they were desperate to rid themselves of these hitchhikers.

I knew that it wasn’t going to be as easy as that, though. What ensued was a dangerous, dark, cold-blooded, vicious ride through the Canadian countryside. Tom and Alice were no longer in control. They were at the mercy of their hitchhikers, who were willing to do whatever it would take to flee the area.

There was never a dull moment in this novel. It was action-packed from start to finish. I didn’t want to put the book down; I needed to find out what was going to happen next. I was on pins and needles, filled with dread, and hoping for the best for Tom and Alice. Despite all of the action, the author still delivered a story that had plenty of depth and emotion.

While the book did have some twists that I didn’t see coming, I did have part of the story figured out, however, it didn’t take away from my overall enjoyment of the book.

If you’re looking for a thrilling read, do yourself a favor and pick up The Hitchhikers.
