This novel was like a nostalgic punch to the gut. So Old, So Young is the story of six friends over the course of twenty years. The reader gets to see them at various points in their lives: when they met, university, partying, miniscule apartments, jobs, falling in love, getting married, having a family, and growing apart. It was filled with good times, heartfelt moments, hardships, and pain, but this journey was worth every minute.
I felt as though I knew these characters. I witnessed them navigating their lives, their friendships, and romances, and I felt it all right along with them. With every chapter, I just wanted to delve further and further into these characters’ lives. They were complicated and messy and completely captivating. They didn’t always do the right thing or make the best choices. They were flawed, insecure, and had regrets. They were relatable. We all believe that our friendships are for life, that our ride or dies will always be just that, but life has a tendency to take us in different directions, down different paths, and sometimes we grow apart from the ones that we once held so close. That’s life.
I am so glad that I had the opportunity to read this novel. It was a fast-paced, entertaining story of friendship during pivotal times in life. In my opinion, it would make an excellent television series or movie! I am certainly going to keep my eyes peeled for the next book by Grant Ginder.
