The Favorites was a captivating read from start to finish. I wanted to know the story of Katarina Shaw and Heath Rocha, what happened to end their ice dance careers and what had become of them. I felt as though I was reading a juicy exposé, getting all of the details of their skating journey as well as their relationship, and in a way, I was. The format of the book, with the interviews from fellow skaters, coaches, and judges made this book that much more titillating.
When Katarina saw Sheila Lin win the gold medal at the 1988 Winter Olympic Games in Calgary, she knew that she wanted to be a figure skating champion. She may have only been young, but her desire and ambition were always strong. She wasn’t afraid to work hard to get results. It’s what she would need to do to go all the way.
When Kat and Heath met, they became fast friends. They enjoyed spending time together, and she helped teach him how to skate. While they may have been lacking the financial resources that figure skating required, they were not lacking the strong will, determination, and love for the sport and each other.
Katarina Shaw and Heath Rocha had chemistry galore, both on and off the ice. While they were the underdogs of the ice dance world, no one could deny that their skating was intense, emotional, and edgy. Kat was motivated to be a winner, a champion. She would do almost anything to ensure that her figure skating dreams came true. Heath was just happy to be with Kat, and if winning was what was going to make her happy, he would do almost anything to ensure that her dreams came true.
The Favorites was captivating in every way. From the fierce competitive nature of the sport, the willingness to stop at nothing to win, the status, the fame, and the tumultuous love story, it was a page-turning read that kept me wanting to know how it would end.
