I am just going to start right off by saying that this is one of the best books that I have ever had the pleasure of reading.
Travis Smith is death. He isn’t clothed in black and carrying a scythe. He lives amongst society, he is young, he lives in an apartment, and he shows up to offer comfort to those in their final minutes of life. He isn’t there to judge or change the outcome of their impending deaths. He is just there to be with them. Despite this being what Travis is and does, the burden of it all isn’t lost on him. When he meets his neighbor and her daughters who live across the hall from him, he sees what he has been missing.
Throughout the novel, the reader gets little glimpses into the lives of other characters as they are getting ready to die. We get to see their endings with Travis at their sides. These sections of the book were done to perfection, adding to an already wonderful story.
This novel was written so beautifully, eloquently, and with so much emotion. It is difficult to even write a review for it because I don’t think I can adequately express how much I enjoyed it.
I read every word with a lump in my throat and a heavy heart. It was a book that I didn’t want to put down once I began reading it, but when real life was calling me, I couldn’t wait to get back to it. Even after finishing the final page, I just can’t stop thinking about this story and its characters. I will be recommending this book to everyone that I know. I can’t wait to read more books by Ben Reeves.
Everything Was Beautiful and Nothing Hurt will definitely be gracing my list of favorite books of 2026 and of all time!
