I was seeing this book everywhere, so I didn’t want to miss out on a novel that everyone was raving about. I am so glad that I let my fear of missing out win over because this book was worth all of the hype.
The Correspondent is written in epistolary form, which makes perfect sense. It was fast paced, engaging, and made me feel as though I had an insight into Sybil’s life. Sybil was an interesting, intelligent character. She enjoyed writing letters to people. If she felt something or had something that needed saying, writing it in a letter was how she preferred to communicate. She wasn’t shy about it either. She was a bit of an odd bird, but she was a prickly kind of likeable. She didn’t mince words, she said/wrote it like it was. I’m not going to lie, on a few occasions I found myself thinking No, Sybil, don’t write that. But that was just how Sybil was, and I enjoyed my time with her.
Throughout her correspondence with people, I was able to get a feel for how her life was, however, there was also a bit of her story that she kept close to her chest. My curiosity was piqued, and my mind was whirling with what Sybil was keeping to herself.
I loved the relationships that she made through her correspondence. She had a way of making friends with the unlikeliest people, but it was very endearing.
The Correspondent was a wonderful novel. It was thoughtful, emotional, and completely captivating. It’s a book that has stayed on my mind even after reading the last page. It will definitely be making my list of favorite books of 2025!
