I will just start off by saying that I didn’t want this book to end. I was torn between wanting to neglect all of my real-life obligations to keep reading and wanting to draw it out so that I had more time with these characters. It was a wonderful problem to have, really.
Sam’s life has been in a rut since she had to move back in with her mother during the pandemic. Her academic career was on hold. She was working at a restaurant/bar. To make matters worse, she was in a friends-with-benefits relationship with her coworker that didn’t seem to be going anywhere. She has been let down by men her whole life, beginning with her own father, so, she knows not to expect too much.
Nick is just trying to do right by his nine-year-old daughter. He is working as a manager of a chain restaurant and trying to provide a normal, stable life for his child. He is responsible, kind, helpful, and a great dad.
While Sam and Nick are at different points in their lives, their attraction to one another proves difficult to deny. Don’t expect it to be an easy love story, though. There were plenty of hurdles to jump over, and I wouldn’t have wanted it any other way.
The characters were wonderful. There was plenty of humor, emotion, romance, and the chemistry between Sam and Nick was off the charts. But what I really enjoyed was the level of angst in this book. I felt it right in the pit of my stomach. I felt the butterflies, my heart pounded, and it also plummeted a few times. I never had the story figured out. I wasn’t sure where the author was going to take these characters, but I was more than happy to just sit back and find out.
I am also very appreciative of slow-burning romances, and this one was done to perfection. I enjoyed getting to know Sam, seeing what her life was like, witnessing her relationships. The author took her time developing the characters and building up their relationship. It’s the anticipation and build-up that really makes for a great story.
There was also depth to the story and the characters. It went beyond merely an age-gap love story (although, the love story was wonderful). The characters were normal people, feeling normal things, and trying to make the best out of their lives. The interactions between the characters and their banter were second to none. It was just a well-rounded read. I also enjoyed Sam’s love of comic books and the clever way the panels were written into the story.
I absolutely loved everything about this story. I can’t wait to read more books by Kate Goldbeck in the near future.
