If the apocalypse ever happens and human life changes and life as we know it comes to a grinding halt, I hope that humanity can be remembered, the animals can survive, and that there is a clever crow who can lead the way.

Hollow Kingdom was a smart, witty, heartfelt tale of the apocalypse. Told from the perspective of a crow named S.T. (Shit Turd) and accompanied by his trustworthy but slobbery best canine friend Dennis. When S.T. sees his favorite human changing (and his eyeball pops out of his head), he knows that something is amiss. S.T. was raised by his human, he knows he’s a crow, but he lives as closely as a human as a crow could. We get to know his human, Big Jim, through S.T.’s memories, and let me tell you, they had some interesting times together. With each memory, the reader gets to see how much this crow loved his human, how their lives intertwined, and how greatly Big Jim will be missed by his bird.  Yes, with all of the wit and moments that made me laugh out loud, I was also hit right smack-dab in the feels by this crow and his love for his human (and his dog, of course).

Hollow Kingdom is a unique read in every way. As a person who adores animals, it was easy for me to be swept up in a story that was dominated by them. I loved the characters (again, what’s not to love, they’re animals) and their brave tale of survival as they set out to make their way in this new world that is filled with new dangers.

This novel came very highly recommended to me and I can understand why. It was just a wonderful story that took me on an incredible adventure. It made me laugh, it brought tears to my eyes, it made me grip my Kindle in apprehension, and it made me want a crow to call my very own.
