Whenever I see a new book announced by Mhairi McFarlane, it immediately gets added to my ever-growing to-be-read pile.
I do love an enemies-to-lovers workplace romance. I want the rivalry, the tension, the angst, and the push and pull between the characters. While this story did have all of that, it did take a while for all of the romance to occur. With that being said, I am a big fan of slow-burn romances. I always enjoy it when the author takes their time with the characters and their relationship.
Bel was a podcaster, journalist, and an unapologetic snacker (loved that). When she meets the new intern, she isn’t really trying to put her best foot forward and make a good impression on him, and as it turned out he wasn’t impressed with her at all. Connor was not the intern that Bel and Aaron were expecting. Connor was in his thirties, well put together, serious, and just there to get down to work.
What Mhairi McFarlane does very well is that she delivers a story that has a lot of layers. Not only do we have the tension between Bel and Connor, but Bel is investigating a story that could be the biggest of her life. If she is able to break this story, it could have serious ramifications for the community and those involved. Ah, but not only do we have this investigation going on, but we also have Bel’s past relationship that is proving to be a big problem for her. There is a lot going on in Cover Story that keeps the reader not even missing the romance all that much.
Cover Story was an entertaining read that kept me wanting to read. I already have Mhairi McFarlane’s next book in my TBR list!
