Practical Demonkeeping

By Christopher Moore

I was looking for a new Audible to listen to; I was in the mood for something a little absurd and not too long. What I landed on was Practical Demonkeeping by Christopher Moore.

Moore has a knack for taking a mishmash of things that you wouldn’t think of putting together, throwing them together in a blender and coming out with a rather savory story – one where the whole (with a “w”) is far better than you ever thought the sum of those parts would be.

In this story, a demon, a genie and witch walk into a bar, and the rest is a fun story that was entertaining from start to finish. I really can’t think of another author who can pull off this sort of clash of supernatural characters and make it work.

Is Practical Demonkeeping Moore’s best work? No, that would be Lamb (in my opinion). But it is the first in a substantial line of books over thirty years that push the boundaries on how much fun you can have; Moore writing and me reading (or listening, as the case may be).
