The Broken Places

By Blaine Daigle

The Broken Places is a dark horror story set in the North; you know that I am a sucker for these stories.

This story revolves around three characters, each of whom has suffered loss and tragedy.  We transition back and forth between their current trip to the dark cabin in the Yukon during the winter to their horrible events that have brought them to this moment.

Daigle layers on the levels of darkness in this story. Troubled characters set in a time and place with very few hours of sunlight and a dark curse slowly building itself up around them.

The story helped pull me into the characters lives. I was able to invest myself into the narrative.

I enjoyed The Broken Places. It was a nice break between other stories, but for some reason I did not find myself thinking about the story when I wasn’t reading it; I wasn’t excited to get back to the story. Was it me? Was the stuff going on outside the story preoccupying my mind? Who knows? But I always go with the philosophy that it is the author’s job to make me want to get back to the story when real life happens.
