I am always drawn to stories that make me wonder what I would do if faced with a similar circumstance. If a catastrophic event occurred and took out the electrical grid, changing the world as we know it, how would we as people cope and survive? I would like to think the best of humanity, but I am also a realist, and I know that when push comes to shove and when fear of the unknown takes over, it would be every man and woman for his/herself. As soon as I found out that Mia Sheridan was going to be writing this type of story intermingled with a love story, I knew that I just had to read it.
Heart of the Sun has a lot of trope favorites: childhood friends, celebrities, bodyguards, second chances, and dystopian/survival. It had a lot going on all wrapped up in one complete story. I love a good romance, but I think that I enjoyed the survival aspect of this novel the best. The love story just ended up being the cherry on top.
Tuck and Emily shared a common past. Growing up in rural California on neighboring orange farms, they ended up spending a lot of time together. From playing together as smaller children to developing some feelings for each other as teenagers, they were a constant in each others lives, until they weren’t, and each of their lives took completely different courses.
When Tuck and Emily reunite years later, they may remember the bond that they had shared all those years ago, but time had definitely changed them, and neither of them really knows the other anymore. When tragedy strikes and the world is not what you once knew, you need to rely on the people who are close to you. Luckily for Emily, Tuck was used to looking out for himself in tough circumstances, but even Tuck didn’t know what to make of their new reality.
Heart of the Sun was an intriguing read. As I mentioned, I enjoyed the survival aspect of this novel. I liked seeing how people interacted, how they banded together, how they did things that they would normally never do in order to survive. When pushed to their limits, people will do what they have to do to save themselves and their loved ones.
