How cute was that! This was a short and sweet coming-of-age story that, despite its length, was still able to pack a good punch.
While I “came of age” a fairly long time ago, let me just say that you don’t have to be in that age group to enjoy this story. It took me back to my youth and my own trips to the drive-in. Rainbow Rowell captured the experience perfectly. From the snack bar, the playground, the old sound systems that you had to put in your car window, I was transported right back to those days.
Rowell also captured the feelings of youth. With the uncertainty and insecurity of youth, Julia often feels invisible to her peers. She finds herself to be unremarkable and assumes that others feel the same way. In this story, we get to see Julia step out of her comfort zone and let herself be seen.
