Just as the title proclaims, this book is about death, but don’t assume that it’s all gloom and doom. Yes, there is gloom and doom, it is about death and grieving after all, but Nick Spalding is very adept at taking serious subject matter and making you laugh out loud.

Alice and Ben met in the most unusual way. Alice went to her husband’s grave on his birthday, and Ben was at his brother’s grave right alongside, but Ben was dressed as Kermit the Frog (not the usual cemetery attire). You don’t see that every day! What transpired that day was the start of a friendship between Alice and Ben, and on that day every year after that, they would meet at their loved one’s graves to catch up on life, talk about their grief, and just be there for one another. Every year, Ben would arrive at the cemetery dressed up in a different absurd costume that his late brother had requested. It was his final way to be able to honor his brother and a memory that they held dear. I looked forward to finding out what he was going to be wearing every year.

Grave Talk had plenty of humorous moments, but it wasn’t all hijinks and laughter. This is ultimately a book about loss, grief, and how we cope and move on in life after losing someone. It’s a story of friendship, having a shoulder to lean on and cry on, having a bond with someone who understands what you are going through, and learning how to pick up the pieces of your life and propel yourself forward.

I laughed, I cried, I enjoyed my time with Alice and Ben. Grave Talk was just an all-around wonderful read that was both heartfelt and hopeful.
