As soon as I saw this book announced, it was sitting high up on my must-read list. Atmosphere started off strong. I was hooked from the beginning and could not wait to delve deeper into the story.
Joan was an interesting, likable character. She was brilliant, caring, reserved, calm, motivated, and she was satisfied with her life, but when the opportunity arose to apply for NASA’s Space Shuttle program, she jumped at the chance to earn a spot.
The astronauts in training were a vibrant group of people, each with his or her own skill set to offer to the program, all vying for their opportunity to go up in space and contribute in one way or another. Spending so much time together, friendships were forged, and in some cases, deeper feelings developed.
Despite NASA’s program being opened up to women, there was still a good amount of sexism to be found. It was the early 1980s, and these women were there to share their knowledge, their fortitude, and to make themselves invaluable members of the team.
Joan was not only trying to navigate her way in this highly rigorous program, but she was also dealing with issues in her personal life. Joan and her sister had a relationship that was fraught with tension and dependence. The one bright light in Joan’s life was her niece, Frances, whom she loved as if she were her own daughter. Let me just reiterate that Joan was a kind and loving woman with the patience of a saint.
Atmosphere is also a love story. There is so much love in this book. Whether it’s friendship, familial, or romantic, there is a lot of love to be found. This novel also has its share of action and heart-pounding moments that had me on the edge of my seat. My poor heart was put through the wringer.
While the beginning started off strong, the middle section of the book mellowed out a bit for me. However, the last 40 percent had me glued to my Kindle. I was an emotional wreck. My stomach was tied in knots, my heart was beating fast, and the tears welling up in my eyes seemed never ending. And it was so worth it! I felt frazzled and spent, and I wouldn’t have had it any other way.
