There’s just something about novels that are set in remote, wilderness locations that really pique my interest. As soon as I read the synopsis, I knew that I was going to add this book to my to-be-read pile.
When Sadie and Felix moved to the homestead where he grew up in the mountains, it seemed like an ideal spot where they could work on their projects during their sabbaticals. Something felt off about that house and the area, and to make matters worse, Felix acted differently when he was there. He became secretive and closed off. When Felix left for a conference for a couple of days, Sadie was going to miss him, but a couple of days wasn’t a long time, however, when he didn’t return to the homestead as planned, eerie things began to happen.
Just as I suspected, I wasn’t sure who or what I could trust. There was just a lurking, menacing feeling that I had about every character that was introduced. Even Sadie, who was at her most vulnerable in that old house in the mountains, yeah, I even had my doubts about her.
The book is told from the before and the present day. I liked seeing Sadie and Felix’s relationship blossom. It enabled me to get to know the characters a bit better, to not only see who they were before they were married and living on the mountain but also what their family lives were like growing up.
With Felix missing, a winter storm building, and strangers lurking on the perimeter of the property, Sadie is rightfully scared. This is where the story really amped up for me. I could feel Sadie’s fear through the pages. Who was out there? What did they want? Where was her husband? I couldn’t wait to find out.
Where He Left Me was a propulsive read that grabbed my attention early on, but it really kept me on pins and needles as the book progressed. It became a fast-paced, nail-biting thriller that kept me glued to the pages. That’s what I want when I read a novel in this genre.
