This was one of the best books that I’ve had the pleasure of reading this year.  I was pulled in right from the beginning and never wanted it to end.  Inside this breathtaking cover is a book that is emotional, raw, painful, hopeful, and just beautiful.

As soon as I found out about this book, I knew that I had to read it.  I’m always intrigued by a romance between a hard-nosed, cold-hearted boss and his employee.  Between Here and the Horizon was so much more than I had anticipated.  There are so many layers to this story.  It tugged at my heartstrings, consumed me, and shocked me.  Honestly, there were twists in this book that I never saw coming.

Ophelia was the type of character that you couldn’t help but like.  She had experienced her share of personal and professional setbacks, but when her parents’ failing restaurant is in dire financial need, Ophelia is there to help out in any way that she can, even if it means moving from sunny California to an island off the east coast to care for the children of a rude, widowed businessman.  She was a selfless, down to earth character that, as a reader, I just wanted to see succeed.

To the outside world, Ronan Fletcher would appear to have it all.  He’s a handsome, young successful businessman and the father of two great kids.  But as we all know, looks can be deceiving.  He’s lived through his share of turmoil and heartache.  It has made him the man that he is today.

The book does have flashback chapters into the past.  This gives the reader the opportunity to get a peek into the life of the characters and to see what events have contributed to their current lifestyles.  As I mentioned earlier, there are many layers to this story.  With each layer that unfolded, I was able to have a better understanding of the characters, their mindsets, and their motivations.

Between Here and the Horizon was my ideal type of romance.  It was not a case of love at first sight, maybe instant attraction, but definitely not love.  The relationship between the characters did not happen overnight.  It was a slow burn that had both of the characters fighting it and hanging on until they finally allowed themselves to fall.  In my opinion, the best part of any romance novel is the anticipation and build up.  I want to see how their relationship develops, how they interact, how their attraction builds over time.  Callie Hart created this tension and chemistry perfectly.

Between Here and the Horizon was an exquisite book that made me feel the story right along with the characters, I wasn’t simply reading the words, I was living it with them.  It’s one of those special books that just encapsulated everything that I love about a story and makes me happy to be a reader.
